There’s still time to Step up for 30
Tuesday 22 March 2022
There's still time to Step up for 30 with us in April! It's really simple, just get active every day during the month and ask people to sponsor you. We spoke to six people who took on the challenge last year.
Amanda Whiting
“I got involved to raise awareness and celebrate the memory of my dear friend who died in her 50's after a four year diagnosis - utterly tragic after so many years of working together as nurses. I found the daily exercise helped with my own grief and made me smile thinking of her whilst raising over £1,000.”
Carolyn Joseph
“My reason was to take part in a positive activity that was going to help me feel better and fitter, remembering my husband in a special way and raising awareness of the disease and charity at the same time. My husband always loved activity and the outdoors too so it seemed an obvious thing to take part in.”
Debbie Taylor
“Having been successfully treated for stage 3 sigmoid cancer in 2019 I am currently cancer free. I did Step up for 30 (10,000+ steps a day) to raise money and awareness of the disease.”
Emma Reeve
“I’m amazed at what I achieved every day whilst raising much needed funds. I took part because I finally felt ready to give something back after being diagnosed with stage 3 bowel cancer at the age of 36. I needed to get fitter and doing this challenge really helped and inspired me. I am thankful for all the research and the support Bowel Cancer UK has given me and others like me.”
Shelia Overton
“I did the Step up for 30 challenge in 2021 in memory of my husband and daughter who both lost their fight to bowel cancer in 2017. I met some lovely people via Facebook, walking every day and meeting these people certainly helped me. I’m looking forward to Step up for 30 2022.”
Tommy Knott
“I was diagnosed with bowel cancer on 16 February 2021, following a routine screening test that showed blood in the sample. I had not had any symptoms prior to this. After scans and biopsies, I was given a date for my operation on 25 March. The operation went well, as did my recovery. I was told that drinking water and walking would be the best things to help me. One day I clocked up 2km walking around the ward.
I went home on 29 March and was determined to do something to promote the bowel cancer screening programme as it was this that potentially saved my life. I found Bowel Cancer UK and saw the Step up for 30 challenge. I decided to register and do what I could to raise money and awareness. I thought that if I could walk 2km around a hospital ward, I should be able to do that every day for 30 days, so I set my target at 60km. I managed to raise well over £1,000 and in the end walked over 100km during the challenge, but more importantly to me, I managed to raise awareness. Several of my friends decided to book a test as a result of my efforts which was brilliant.”
