New series for 2022: #thisisbowelcancer podcast

To mark Bowel Cancer Awareness Month we've launched our new #thisisbowelcancer podcast series shining a light on the varied and many people affected by the disease.

Episode one: Raising awareness of bowel cancer

The first episode sees Genevieve Edwards, Chief Executive of Bowel Cancer UK, discussing with bowel cancer patient Rachel Reed and Harriet Watson, Consultant Nurse at Guy's and St Thomas' NHS Trust and a Clinical Advisor for Health Education England, what they're both doing to raise awareness of bowel cancer in their respective communities.

Series one

BBC journalist George Alagiah OBE was the host of series one and two of our podcast. He interviewed supporters and leading experts on the disease, and discussed his own treatment and diagnosis. Very sadly, George died in July 2023. You can read our tribute to him here.

George Alagiah interviews Steve Clark from Caversham, who was diagnosed with bowel cancer at 49 and is now on maintenance chemo for life. Joining them is oncologist Professor Mark Saunders, from The Christie NHS Foundation Trust in Manchester, who explains the different types of chemotherapy for bowel cancer.

COVID-19 special: Living with bowel cancer during the coronavirus pandemic

Host and BBC newsreader George Alagiah talks to fellow bowel cancer patient Beth Purvis, our Chief Executive Genevieve Edwards and Clinical Oncologist Prof. Richard Adams during the COVID-19 pandemic.

They discuss a wide range of subjects, including shielding, coming out of lockdown, the recovery of cancer services, and the impact of a cancer diagnosis on family.

Never Too Young special: Bowel cancer in the under 50s

George Alagiah speaks to mum-of-three Sarah Bates, who was diagnosed with bowel cancer aged just 39, and oncologist Professor Mark Saunders to discuss the impact of bowel cancer on people under the age of 50.

The trio discuss a range of issues highlighted in our Never Too Young report and the importance of GPs being aware that, although rare, young people can be diagnosed with the disease.
