Volunteer to raise awareness of bowel cancer

We’re looking for volunteers who have been affected by bowel cancer to give short talks in their local area about the disease to raise awareness of the UK’s second biggest cancer killer.

The talks, usually held in nearby work places, community groups or anywhere an existing group comes together, will raise awareness of the disease, signs and symptoms, risk factors and the screening programme as well as highlighting the volunteers own experience.

Bowel cancer is the fourth most common cancer in the UK. Over 41,200 people are diagnosed with bowel cancer every year, yet it is treatable and curable especially if diagnosed early.

Gail Curry, Head of Health Promotion and Training at the charity said, “A key part of our work is educating patients, the public and healthcare professionals about bowel cancer, in particular the importance of early diagnosis. One of the ways we do this is through our health promotion volunteer programme, which has been recognised by the Royal Society of Public Health.

“All we ask is that you’re enthusiastic about raising awareness of bowel cancer and are comfortable speaking in public. A full day's training is given with plenty of time to practise the presentation, and we will support you every step of the way."
