Why Rebekah is trekking across Kenya for the charity
Four years ago, Rebekah’s dad was diagnosed with bowel cancer and to mark his sixth anniversary of being in remission, she’s taking on the challenge of a lifetime by walking the Kenya Maasai Adventure trek for us in August 2020.
Six years ago, my dad was diagnosed with bowel cancer. He’s very grateful that he can go to the toilet every day, but for a week he couldn’t go at all. He went to his GP and was very quickly diagnosed with the disease. Luckily it was caught early and he only had surgery. He encourages everyone who receives the bowel cancer screening test in the post to complete it, it could save your life.
In addition, my good friend Stuart was diagnosed with stage 4 cancer at age 39 in 2015. He had no warning signs, until he began to get stomach pains and frequently visit the bathroom. He was told he had six months to two years to live. I am so, so grateful for the medical research that has enabled Stuart to still be here and enjoy his life.
So many of us are uneducated and misunderstand that our life styles and choices can cause cancer. Bowel cancer is one of the most preventable cancers.
That’s why I chose to raise funds for the charity as they fund targeted research, provide expert information and support to patients and their families, educate the public and professionals about the disease and campaign for early diagnosis and access to best treatment and care.
They are here to stop people dying of bowel cancer and as a thank you for them helping save my daddy’s life, this is my way of giving something small back. My dad has donated £300. Hopefully this fundraising will go towards saving many more people’s lives too. I hope to not only raise funds but also awareness of how to prevent cancer.
I will be self-funding my trip so that all funds raised go directly to the charity. I really thank you so much for your support, anything you can donate will all add up.
