Beating bowel cancer together

Our Step up for 30 superstars

Here are the stories of just a couple of our amazing supporters taking on Step up for 30 throughout June.

Karen Humphrey

I'm taking part in Step up for 30 to support an organisation who were there for me in my tough times. I found out I had bowel cancer early February 2020. We were totally shocked as I was the fittest that I had ever been and never thought it would happen to me. I had surgery on 9 March removing a 2.5 cm tumour. Three weeks later I found out that it had not spread and would not need any chemo. We were elated. I had amazing service from the colorectal team at Wexham Park Hospital  who were always there for in the weeks leading up to my op and could not gone through it without them.

My exercises include either taking part in a virtual boot camp class or walking five miles each day.

20 years ago this week I was diagnosed with bowel cancer. I was 27. I was, at that time, the youngest person the hospital had ever treated for the disease with no previous family history.  On 6 June 2000 I underwent a bowel resection followed by six months of chemotherapy - and I’m still here! This anniversary feels like the perfect time to give something back.

Another big operation in January this year, followed by lockdown, has left me a bit (lot!) out of shape! I owe it to those who saved my life to look after this body, so I’m taking part in Step up for 30 getting active every day in June. The lack of gyms and my arthritic knees means I’ll need to be inventive, so I’m planning on mixing it up with walks, short runs, yoga, and trying out new things I find on YouTube!

I’ve met my fundraising target again so I’ve increased it again and will continue to do so as we go through June. I started with £100 and am up to £215. I know it’s not a huge amount of money but considering the crazy times we are in, I think people have been amazing!
