Drymen Dental Care get kilted up for Bowel Cancer UK
Friday 6 May 2022
Suzanne Maxwell, Practice Manager explains the motivation behind Drymen Dental Care in Glasgow doing the Kiltwalk for Bowel Cancer UK.
As a practice we wanted to do something this year to challenge ourselves and raise money for charity. Bowel Cancer UK were an obvious choice as we have an amazing, inspirational member of staff, Sue Gage, who beat bowel cancer back in 2017. She had a really tough battle but she is the most positive person we know. After her bowel cancer diagnosis, she decided to change career, and that is when we were lucky enough that she joined our team and re-trained to become a dental nurse.
She is a wonderful person; hard-working, always smiling and nothing is ever a bother. She is a wife and mum to two grown-up girls and her two dogs. She loves wild swimming, running and making her own amazing clothes!
We are all trying to get out walking and train before the event, but I think we are all aware we need to be doing more to get our feet, knees and hips ready for the challenge!
We are all fundraising individually via JustGiving but we have also created a fundraising board in the practice and we hope to raise a good amount of money through our lovely, generous patients. We are in the process of designing and making team t-shirts to wear on the day too.
The benefit to the team in taking part is huge. I think it will achieve a lot on many levels. Individually it will give us a huge sense of achievement to complete the 22 miles. As a team it will be a great bonding experience – to get through the pain, blisters, laughs and challenges the day will pose together, I think will bring us all closer.
Finally, the obvious benefit of raising money for such a worthy charity and giving back to an organisation that helped one of our own through her battle with bowel cancer.
In terms of a fundraising goal – we initially set a target of £1,000 but we've raised over £2,700! The Tom Hunter foundation is also giving 50% more on top of everything we raise, which we're delighted about.
