Beating bowel cancer together

Welsh rugby legend urges people to take bowel screening test

During this Six Nations Championships, Public Health Wales, working together with us and Welsh Rugby legend, Jamie Roberts, are urging people to do the bowel screening test when they receive it in the post.

Currently in Wales, if you’re aged 60 – 74 you will receive a free NHS bowel screening test every two years.

The simple test looks for blood in poo which can indicate the presence of cancer or polyps (non-cancerous growths). Screening can detect tiny amounts of blood in poo, which can’t normally be seen. The test is quick and easy to use and you do it in the privacy of your own home.

Bowel cancer is the second biggest cancer killer in Wales, but it’s treatable and curable, especially if diagnosed early. Screening aims to detect bowel cancer at an early stage, when treatment has the best chance of working.

Jamie Roberts, former Welsh rugby international player, has joined forces with Bowel Screening Wales as a campaign ambassador.

Jamie said: “I’m proud to be part of this campaign as many more people need to be aware of the importance of taking the screening test. It’s a simple job that can be done within the privacy of your own home, and it doesn’t cost you a thing. Don’t be scared, do the test.”

Lowri Griffiths, Head of Wales at Bowel Cancer UK, says: “Bowel cancer screening saves lives. If bowel cancer is diagnosed at the earliest stage, nearly everyone can be successfully treated. Whilst we’re pleased that more people have completed the test over the last year, almost half of all people invited haven’t. We hope the TV advertising campaign with Jamie Roberts and Bowel Screening Wales will encourage more people to take this life-saving test when they receive it in the post for free.”

Seren rygbi Cymru yn annog pobl i sefyll prawf sgrinio coluddyn

Yn ystod y Pencampwriaeth Chwe Gwlad hyn, mae Iechyd Cyhoeddus Cymru, gan weithio gyda ni a seren rygbi Cymru, Jamie Roberts, yn annog pobl i wneud y prawf sgrinio coluddyn pan fyddant yn ei dderbyn drwy’r post.

Ar hyn o bryd yng Nghymru, os ydych chi rhwng 60 a 74 oed, byddwch yn derbyn prawf sgrinio coluddyn y GIG am ddim, bob dwy flynedd.

Mae'r prawf syml yn edrych am waed yn y pŵ a all ddangos presenoldeb canser neu bolypau (tyfiannau nad ydynt yn ganser). Gall sgrinio ganfod ychydig bach o waed yn y pŵ, na ellir ei weld fel rheol. Mae'r prawf yn gyflym ac yn hawdd ei ddefnyddio ac rydych chi'n ei wneud ym mhreifatrwydd eich cartref eich hun.

Canser y coluddyn yw'r ail laddwr canser mwyaf yng Nghymru, ond gellir ei drin a'i wella, yn enwedig os caiff ei ddarganfod yn gynnar. Nod sgrinio yw dod o hyd i ganser y coluddyn yn gynnar, pan fydd gan driniaeth y siawns orau o weithio.

Mae Jamie Roberts, cyn chwaraewr rygbi rhyngwladol Cymru, wedi ymuno â Sgrinio Coluddion Cymru (Bowel Screening Wales) fel llysgennad ymgyrchu.

Meddai Jamie: “Rwy’n falch o fod yn rhan o’r ymgyrch hon gan fod angen i lawer mwy o bobl fod yn ymwybodol o bwysigrwydd gwneud y prawf sgrinio. Mae'n brawf hawdd y gellir ei wneud ym mhreifatrwydd eich cartref eich hun, ac nid yw'n costio unrhywbeth i chi. Peidiwch â bod ofn, gwnewch y prawf.”

Meddai Lowri Griffiths, Pennaeth Bowel Cancer UK yng Nghymru: “Mae sgrinio canser y coluddyn yn arbed bywydau. Os bydd canser y coluddyn yn cael ei ddarganfod yn y cam cynharaf, gellir trin bron pawb yn llwyddiannus. Er ein bod yn falch bod mwy o bobl wedi cwblhau'r prawf dros y flwyddyn ddiwethaf, mae bron i hanner yr holl bobl a wahoddwyd heb wneud y prawf. Rydyn ni'n gobeithio y bydd yr ymgyrch hysbysebu teledu gyda Jamie Roberts a Sgrinio Coluddion Cymru yn annog mwy o bobl i sefyll y prawf achubol a rhad ac am ddim hwn pan fyddant yn ei dderbyn trwy’r post.”
