Sainsbury's is the latest supermarket to join our #GetOnARoll campaign
Wednesday 6 July 2022
Sainsbury's, one of the UK's leading supermarkets, has announced they're joining our #GetOnARoll campaign and will be printing the symptoms of bowel cancer across their own-brand toilet paper from October 2022.
Bowel cancer is the UK's fourth most common cancer and the second biggest cancer killer. Yet almost half of adults around the UK couldn't name a single symptom of bowel cancer in a recent survey. Red flag symptoms include changes in bowel habit, bleeding from your bottom and blood in your poo, which can all be noticed while people are on the toilet.
Knowing the symptoms to look out for, and acting on them by speaking to a GP, can lead to bowel cancer being diagnosed at an earlier stage when it is easier to treat and even cure.
Sainsbury's have committed to placing the charity's logo and list of bowel cancer symptoms across ranges of their own-branded toilet roll packs, which will be rolled out across all Sainsbury's stores and online starting from October 2022, reaching millions of customers with this potentially lifesaving information.
Dr Lisa Wilde, Director of Research and External Affairs at Bowel Cancer UK, says: "We're thrilled that Sainsbury's is joining our hugely popular #GetOnARoll campaign, to raise vital awareness of bowel cancer symptoms with people all over the country.
"Bowel cancer is treatable and curable especially if diagnosed early, but 60% of people are diagnosed at later stages when it's much more difficult to treat. Part of the problem is low awareness of the red flag symptoms of the disease that should prompt people to contact their GP.
"It's such a simple idea to share this important information on loo roll packaging. It could help us reach millions more people every year, and will undoubtedly help save lives."
