We award grants to fund bowel cancer research worth nearly £440,000
We’re delighted to announce that we’re funding four new bowel cancer research projects totalling nearly £440,000. These awards are part of our investment of over £1.3 million pounds to support research with the greatest benefits for those at risk of and affected by the disease.
Our research projects bring us closer to the charity’s vision of a future where nobody dies of bowel cancer. The disease is the second biggest cancer killer in the UK. However, it shouldn’t be because it is treatable and curable especially if diagnosed early.
A short overview of three of the funded research projects (we’ll launch details of the fourth research project soon):
- Professor Robert Steele from the University of Dundee will determine how the bowel cancer screening test, the faecal immunochemical test (FIT), can be more effectively used to detect or rule out the disease. Read more.
- Professor Mohammad Ilyas from the University of Nottingham will investigate if the gut environment might affect how bowel cancer grows in people under the age of 50. Read more.
- Dr Alex Greenhough from the University of the West of England is looking to understand why some patients with rectal cancer don’t respond well to certain treatments and find new ways to improve the likelihood of these treatments working. Read more.
