Online support groups - Frequently asked questions
How often do the groups run?
Our groups are held once per month and last for up to 90 minutes. However, there may be times when our groups don’t meet so it’s important to check our website to confirm if a session is happening.
Who runs the groups?
The groups are co-facilitated by volunteers who have experienced bowel cancer themselves, supported by Bowel Cancer UK staff.
Do I have to pay anything to attend?
No, our online support groups are free to attend.
What will we talk about?
Our online support groups are very informal and offer the chance to chat with others virtually, so there isn’t an agenda, just you, Zoom and chat. Our volunteers will be there to facilitate the session and offer information and support.
Our online support groups are not for giving or receiving medical advice, but people often speak about how they’re finding treatments, how they feel about their bowel cancer, and tips for coping.
Will I be asked to share things I’m not comfortable with?
Absolutely not. These are not professional counselling groups, so you won’t be asked to share anything you’re not comfortable with. The idea of the group is to connect with others going through something similar in a safe and relaxed environment.
Are the online support groups confidential?
What is discussed in a group is kept confidential within Bowel Cancer UK, so you can be reassured that what’s said within the group stays there. The only time we might need to share something outside of the group is if we were concerned about someone’s safety. Please ask to see our policy for more information.
Can Bowel Cancer UK help group attendees share contact details so they can stay in touch with each other?
We are unable to pass on your details to anyone else. Instead we encourage all group attendees to join our online forum where you can exchange messages and support each other 24 hours a day.
