Beating bowel cancer together

The 2022 Gary Logue Colorectal Cancer Nurse Award Winners

Wednesday 14 September 2022

We're delighted to announce the winners of the prestigious Gary Logue Colorectal Cancer Nurse Awards.

The awards showcase the achievements of colorectal nurses who make a significant impact to those affected by bowel cancer, provide exceptional care, and show outstanding initiative.

The winner of the award for a nurse nominated by their colleagues is Linda Sherwood from Western General Hospital, NHS Lothian. The judges were particularly impressed with the £30,000 grant she secured to identify gaps in patient care for those with advanced bowel cancer with liver metastasis.

She, along with her team, set up a nurse specialist telephone support model, a patient buddy service and developed literature for patients being considered for colorectal liver resection. Linda's dedication to improving patient care and enhancing the service she works for shines through.

The runners up were Vanessa Shearwood from Oxford University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust and Manju Khanna from Northwick Park Hospital, London North West University Healthcare NHS Trust.

The winner for the award for a nurse nominated by a patient and their families is Chloe Pearce from Milton Keynes University Hospital NHS Foundation Trust. The judges loved hearing that she messaged her patients to wish them a lovely holiday – it's the little things that make a difference to their lives. Time and time again Chloe went above and beyond for her patients – her care and compassion hasn't gone unnoticed.

The runners up were Maria Salter from Musgrove Park Hospital, Somerset NHS Foundation Trust and Jackie Creedon-Wilkes from Spire Bushey Hospital.

A special thank you goes to Dr Philippa Kaye, GP, author and broadcaster, for presenting these special awards at the National Colorectal Cancer Nurses Network (NCCNN) Annual Education Event on Wednesday 14 September.

Catherine Winsor, Director of Services at Bowel Cancer UK, said: "We're incredibly proud of our all our winners, finalists and nominees, who like thousands of colorectal cancer nurses up and down the country have demonstrated exceptional care in challenging circumstances. Their patients and families will never forget how nurses made them feel and the support they gave them during a very difficult time in their lives. And for that we thank them wholeheartedly. A huge well done to Linda and Chloe for their outstanding work in the last year."

The awards, now in their eighth year, were set up in memory of Gary Logue, who worked as a nurse for the charity and passed away in 2014, in honour of the tireless dedication he showed during his career.
