Beating bowel cancer together

Public Service Broadcasting gig raises an amazing £26,000

Sunday 19 March 2017

Public Service Broadcasting’s (PSB) charity gig at Islington Assembly Hall raised an impressive £26,000 for us in November 2016. They were joined on stage with special guests’ comedians Ed Byrne and Rob Deering. The charity gig sold out in just a few hours after tickets went on sale.

PSB were keen to raise funds and awareness of Bowel Cancer UK after personal experience of the disease.

PSB’s guitarist and songwriter J. Willgoose, Esq., says: “In late September 2015 my wife, Sarah, was diagnosed with stage 3 bowel cancer at the age of 33, totally out of the blue. She has now completed her treatment and we’re hopeful for the best possible outcome, so as a band we really wanted to try to do something positive to help promote the great work Bowel Cancer UK do for patients and their families.”

Sarah said: “A lot of people – myself included, prior to diagnosis – would think of bowel cancer as a disease which mainly affects older people. We really wanted to draw people’s attention to Bowel Cancer UK’s ‘Never Too Young’ campaign and make sure that people of all ages are aware of the symptoms of bowel cancer and know that they should seek medical attention straight away if they notice any of them.”

Head of Public Fundraising for Bowel Cancer UK, Sarah Weber, said: “We wanted to say a massive thank you to PSB for hosting this gig at the iconic Islington Assembly Hall, and to their very generous fans. Without bands like Public Service Broadcasting doing amazing fundraising events like this, Bowel Cancer UK couldn’t continue to do vital life-saving work and improve the quality of life for all those affected by bowel cancer.”

Every year more than 2,500 younger people are diagnosed with bowel cancer in the UK. While this is only six per cent of those diagnosed, this number is slowly increasing. However bowel cancer is treatable and curable especially if diagnosed early.

Public Service Broadcasting is the corduroy-clad brainchild of London-based J. Willgoose, Esq. who, along with his drumming companion, Wrigglesworth, is on a quest to inform, educate and entertain audiences around the globe.

PSB's uniquely spell-binding live AV Transmissions see them weave samples from old public information films, archive footage and propaganda material around live drums, guitar, banjo and electronics - beaming our past back at us through vintage TV sets and state of the art modern video projection devices.
