We're delighted to announce the winners of the 2026 Gary Logue Colorectal Cancer Nurse Awards

Every year, the Gary Logue Awards mark the achievements of colorectal nurses who make a significant impact on those affected by bowel cancer, provide exceptional care and show outstanding initiative.

The awards were established in memory of Gary Logue to honour the contribution he made to those affected by bowel cancer during his career. Gary worked for us as a specialist nurse advisor and passed away in 2014.

The winner of this year’s award for nurses nominated by their colleagues is:

  • Dorothy Munyanyi, Lead Colorectal Clinical Nurse Specialist at University Hospitals of North Midlands NHS Trust

Sharing their reasons for selecting Dorothy as the winner, the judges said: “Dorothy demonstrates an impressive combination of clinical leadership, innovation and commitment to developing others.

“This is a strong example of leadership that improves care today while also building the skills, culture and systems needed to sustain high-quality colorectal cancer care for the future.”

The runners-up in this category were Vicky Kenyon, Lead Colorectal Nurse at Salford Royal Hospital, and Andrea Darbyshire, Colorectal Clinical Nurse Specialist at Royal Blackburn Hospital.

The winner of the award for a nurse nominated by patients and their families is:

  • Angela Gilmour, Colorectal Clinical Nurse Specialist at University Hospitals of Derby and Buxton NHS Trust

The judges praised ‘incredible examples’ of Angela going above and beyond in her duties, even collaborating with other hospitals for one of her patients to ensure they are getting the best possible care.

“This nomination provides compelling evidence of Angela’s ability to coordinate complex care while never losing sight of the individual at the centre of it,” the judges said.

“This is an excellent example of clinical professionalism, coordination and compassion working together to make a tangible difference to someone’s healthcare experience.”

Other nurses recognised in the patient and family award category were Bal Gil, Colorectal Clinical Nurse Specialist at The Harborne Hospital, and Aimie Newcombe and the CNS Team, Colorectal Clinical Nurse Specialists at North Tees Hospital.

Cancer epidemiologist Dr Laura Woods presented these special awards at the National Colorectal Cancer Nurses Network (NCCNN) Annual Education Event in Newcastle on Thursday 1 October.

The winners have each received £300 bursaries which can be used towards professional development, training opportunities for them or their team, or enhancing the patient experience.

Claire Coughlan, Clinical Lead at Bowel Cancer UK, said: “Nurses play a crucial role in the care of people with cancer and it has been wonderful to hear about the exceptional care, support and initiative shown by all our winners, finalists and nominees at this year’s Gary Logue Awards.

“Across the country, colorectal cancer nurses make an enormous difference to patients and their families guiding them through what is often an incredibly difficult time in their lives. We're proud to continue to recognise and champion these nurses and thank them wholeheartedly for their work.

“Our huge congratulations go to Dorothy and Angela for their outstanding work in the last year and their unfailing commitment to caring for and improving the quality of life of those affected by bowel cancer.”
