Previous event: Reducing late-stage diagnosis rates of bowel cancer (panel discussion)
On Wednesday 28 June 2023 we held a panel discussion on addressing the need to improve late-stage diagnosis rates.
Our multidisciplinary panel from across primary and secondary care explored ways of working together to lower the number of bowel cancer patients currently being diagnosed at a later stage. Attendees also had the opportunity to put questions to the panel.
Speakers
Dr Anwar Khan, Medical Director, Community Colorectal Clinic, Patient First Social Enterprise
Anwar qualified as a GP but after spending time in genetics, realised his niche was in primary care given its emphasis on relationship-based care promoting continuity of care in the community. He has been running a community colorectal clinic with consultant colleagues working “hand in glove” (not same glove!) for the last decade or so and hence blurring the primary care interface.
Filipe Carvalho, Nurse Consultant in Colorectal Disease, Homerton Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust
Filipe is a Nurse Consultant in Colorectal Disease at the Homerton Hospital. He works in one of the highest volume services for colorectal cancer in North-East London, providing professional and clinical leadership to several departments. His role involves delivering the Trust’s cancer workforce strategy, supporting compliance against the cancer waiting times.
Prior to this, Filipe worked at the Royal Marsden Hospital for 13 years, supporting patients with a variety of advanced colorectal cancers, who required complex surgeries, such as pelvic exenteration. Filipe is the Chair for the NCCNN and, in 2021, he was awarded by Bowel Cancer UK, the Bowel Cancer Nurse of the year award. He holds an MSc and has published on a variety of topics.
Gerard McMahon, Head of Policy & Influencing (Devolved Nations), Bowel Cancer UK
Gerard McMahon has been the Head of Policy and Influencing in the devolved nations for Bowel Cancer UK since August 2021. He represents the charity on various national committees and bowel screening programme boards and pan-cancer charity coalitions.
