APPG Parliamentary Launch Report
On Wednesday 19 April 2023, the APPG on Bowel Cancer celebrated its launch at a Parliamentary event during Bowel Cancer Awareness Month.
We were delighted to bring together bowel cancer patients, clinicians, representatives of Bowel Cancer UK and Parliamentarians to hear about why the APPG has been set up and its priorities for the year ahead.
Attendees heard from the Chair of the APPG, Ben Lake MP, who discussed the role of the APPG in raising awareness of bowel cancer and current policy issues in Parliament. Bowel Cancer UK's CEO, Genevieve Edwards, spoke about what can be done to improve bowel cancer outcomes and next steps for policy on bowel cancer. Patient advocate, Carla Mitchell, then made a powerful speech about her experiences of living with bowel cancer, and the importance of recognising the signs and symptoms and securing a diagnosis.
The event was attended by representatives of the Royal College of Pathologists, Cancer Research UK and Macmillan Cancer Support and we were pleased to have a cross-party group of MPs join the event to hear more about the APPG's work programme and how they can support work to improve bowel cancer outcomes.
We're delighted to welcome a number of new MPs as members of the APPG:
- Patrick Grady MP
- Greg Smith MP
- Margaret Ferrier MP
- Virendra Sharma MP
- Elliot Colburn MP
- Rachel Hopkins MP
- Henry Smith MP
