We launch our podcast hosted by BBC’s George Alagiah
BBC journalist George Alagiah hosts our podcast interviewing supporters and leading experts on the disease, as well as discussing his own treatment and diagnosis.
Three episodes are launched during Bowel Cancer Awareness Month this April, called: ‘In conversation with George Alagiah: A Bowel Cancer UK podcast’.
The first episode released today (Thursday 11 April), sees George interview Matthew Wiltshire, 51 from Surrey, who has stage four bowel cancer, and the charity’s Chief Executive, Deborah Alsina MBE, about living well with advanced bowel cancer.
During the episode, George and Matthew share their experiences on how they were diagnosed, their treatment, side effects and how they plan for the future. George reveals that he has a mantra, which he says every evening: “I ask myself if I’ll be here tomorrow, and for the past few years I’ve answered yes.”
George also opens up about having his cancer return: “I found it harder the second time round. I got seduced into the idea that I was the guy who made it. So to be told it had come back was quite tough.”
Deborah Alsina MBE explains what a stage four bowel cancer diagnosis is, what the treatment options are and how the charity campaigns to improve access to treatment and quality of life for those diagnosed with advanced bowel cancer.

“Our podcasts forms part of our #thisisbowelcancer campaign, which aims to shine a light on the varied and many people affected by the disease. Around 268,000 people living in the UK today have been diagnosed with bowel cancer. But these podcasts emphasise that it doesn’t just impact the person diagnosed. It affects families, friends and colleagues, doctors and nurses, scientists and researchers. That’s millions of people right across the UK. We want everyone affected by bowel cancer to come together and take action to help create a future where nobody dies of the disease.”
We'll launch our second episode on Thursday 18 April about living with a stoma and a third episode on Thursday 25 April about caring for someone with bowel cancer.
