Announcing the winners of the 2024 Gary Logue Colorectal Cancer Nurse Awards

Friday 20 September 2024

A huge congratulations to the winners of the tenth year of the prestigious Gary Logue Colorectal Cancer Nurse Awards, which this year includes nurses chosen for their support, care and expertise.

The awards shine a spotlight on the fantastic achievements of colorectal nurses who have a significant impact on patients affected by bowel cancer, provide exceptional care and show outstanding initiative.

We set the awards up ten years ago in honour of Gary, who worked for our charity as a specialist nurse advisor and sadly passed away in 2014.

Our Chief Executive, Genevieve Edwards, presented these special awards at the National Colorectal Cancer Nurses Network (NCCNN) Annual Education Event on Thursday 19 September 2024.

The winner of the award for nurses nominated by their colleagues is:

  • Caroline Trezise, Colorectal Clinical Nurse Specialist from University Hospital Wales

Our judges were incredibly impressed by the outstanding support and compassion Caroline provides to patients, as well as the innovative ideas she has brought to the hospital. This includes her work developing a service to help patients with peritoneal disease after she identified inequalities in access to treatment. Judges also praised Caroline for how well she supports patients referred to the hospitals new service, making sure they have a smooth journey to their surgery.

The runners up were Kate Holloway from Countess of Chester Hospital NHS Foundation Trust and Vanessa Shearwood from Oxford University Hospital NHS Trust.

The winners of the award for a nurse nominated by a patient and their families are:

  • Olu Bansenga, Beth Mwangi and Sarah Gosturani, Chemotherapy Nurses from The Ridgeway Hospital

The judges loved hearing about the care and dedication Olu, Beth and Sarah provided to their patients. One nomination detailed their support of a patient with stage 4 bowel cancer who has regular chemotherapy to keep the disease under control. Although the patient was scared to start treatment, they said that the care provided by Olu, Beth and Sarah has made them “look forward to treatment because I get to spend time with them”. Olu, Beth and Sarah were described in nominations as warm, welcoming and fun with an unwavering commitment to their bowel cancer patients.

The runners up were Charlotte Brown from Ipswich Hospital and Rebecca Halstead from The Christie NHS Foundation Trust.

Thank you to everyone who sent us stories of the exceptional colleagues and colorectal cancer nurses who have made a difference to you.

Catherine Winsor, Director of Services at Bowel Cancer UK, said: “It’s wonderful to hear about the exceptional care, support and initiative shown by all our winners, finalists and nominees.

“A huge congratulations goes out to Caroline, Olu, Beth and Sarah for their remarkable work in the last year, and their unfailing commitment to caring for and improving the quality of life of those affected by bowel cancer.”

“Across the country, colorectal cancer nurses make an enormous difference to patients and their families though guiding them through what can be an incredibly difficult time in their lives. On the tenth year of the Gary Logue awards we are proud to continue to recognise and champion these nurses and thank them for their outstanding work.”
