Announcing the winners of the 2023 Gary Logue Colorectal Cancer Nurse Awards
Thursday 28 September 2023
We're delighted to announce the winners of the prestigious Gary Logue Colorectal Cancer Nurse Awards.
The awards were set up in honour of Gary, a nurse who worked for our charity, who sadly died in 2014. They showcase the achievements of colorectal nurses who make a significant impact to those affected by bowel cancer, provide exceptional care, and show outstanding initiative.
- Louise Foley and Clara Dennis from Warrington and Halton Hospitals NHS Trust are joint winners of the award for nurses nominated by their colleagues.
The judges were particularly impressed with their commitment to supporting those who have come to them as urgent suspected cancer referrals and are waiting for a diagnosis. Louise and Clara always make sure these patients are assessed as soon as possible and have opened additional clinics to accommodate the increasing number of referrals. Their commitment to supporting patients and their families through diagnosis, surgery and aftercare makes them the backbone of their team.
The runners up were Therese Hona from St. Marks Hospital, London and Rachel Henbrey from Queen Elizabeth Hospital, Birmingham.
- Jennifer Rayner from St Mary's Hospital, Newport, Isle of Wight won the award for a nurse nominated by a patient and their families.
The judges loved hearing how she provided counselling support to her patients, including assisting one patient with fertility concerns prior to radiotherapy. Jennifer went above and beyond in helping her patient arrange sperm freezing and was one of the first people to go and meet her patient and her new twins on the maternity ward.
The runners up were Louise Salt from Grimsby Princess Diana Hospital, and Charlotte Durrant from Ipswich Hospital
Catherine Winsor, Director of Services at Bowel Cancer UK, said: "We're incredibly proud of our all our winners, finalists and nominees, who like hundreds of colorectal cancer nurses up and down the country have shown exceptional care to their patients throughout their cancer journey. Their patients and families will never forget how nurses made them feel and the support they gave them during a very difficult time in their lives. And for that we thank them wholeheartedly. A huge well done to Louise, Clara and Jennifer for their outstanding work in the last year."
Our Chief Executive, Genevieve Edwards, presented these special awards at the National Colorectal Cancer Nurses Network (NCCNN) Annual Education Event on Thursday 28 September 2023.
