Celebrating the very best achievements in colorectal cancer nursing

The Gary Logue Colorectal Cancer Nurse Awards take place every September in memory of Gary Logue to celebrate incredible colorectal cancer nursing practice across the country.

2023

The 2023 Gary Logue Colorectal Cancer Nurse Awards took place on Thursday 28 September 2023.

Louise Foley and Clara Dennis from Warrington and Halton Hospitals NHS Trust were the joint winners of the award for nurses nominated by their colleagues.

The judges were particularly impressed with their commitment to supporting those who have come to them as urgent suspected cancer referrals and are waiting for a diagnosis. Louise and Clara always make sure these patients are assessed as soon as possible and have opened additional clinics to accommodate the increasing number of referrals. Their commitment to supporting patients and their families through diagnosis, surgery and aftercare makes them the backbone of their team.

The runners up were Therese Hona from St. Marks Hospital, London and Rachel Henbrey from Queen Elizabeth Hospital, Birmingham.

Jennifer Rayner from St Mary's Hospital, Newport, Isle of Wight won the award for a nurse nominated by a patient and their families.

The judges loved hearing how she provided counselling support to her patients, including assisting one patient with fertility concerns prior to radiotherapy. Jennifer went above and beyond in helping her patient arrange sperm freezing and was one of the first people to go and meet her patient and her new twins on the maternity ward.

The runners up were Louise Salt from Grimsby Princess Diana Hospital, and Charlotte Durrant from Ipswich Hospital

2022

The 2022 Gary Logue Colorectal Cancer Nurse Awards took place on Wednesday 14 September 2022.

The winner for the award for a nurse nominated by their colleagues was Linda Sherwood from Western General Hospital, NHS Lothian.

The judges were particularly impressed with the £30,000 grant she secured to identify gaps in patient care for those with advanced bowel cancer with liver metastasis.

She, along with her team, set up a nurse specialist telephone support model, a patient buddy service and developed literature for patients being considered for colorectal liver resection. Linda's dedication to improving patient care and enhancing the service she works for shines through.

The runners up were Vanessa Shearwood from Oxford University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust and Manju Khanna from Northwick Park Hospital, London North West University Healthcare NHS Trust.

The winner for the award for a nurse nominated by patients and their families was Chloe Pearce from Milton Keynes University Hospital NHS Foundation Trust.

The judges loved hearing that she messaged her patients to wish them a lovely holiday – it's the little things that make a difference to their lives. Time and time again Chloe went above and beyond for her patients – her care and compassion hasn't gone unnoticed.

The runners up were Maria Salter from Musgrove Park Hospital, Somerset NHS Foundation Trust and Jackie Creedon-Wilkes from Spire Bushey Hospital.

2021

The 2021 Gary Logue Colorectal Cancer Nurse Awards took place on Tuesday 29 September 2020.

The winner of the award for a nurse nominated by their colleagues was Filipe Carvalho from the Royal Marsden NHS Foundation Trust.

The judges were particularly impressed by his excellent quality of care and his leadership while setting up and running a COVID cancer hub. The hub saw over 200 patients with colorectal cancer from hospitals across his network undergoing surgery in two COVID free hospital sites.

The runners up were Claire Stephens from Lancashire Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust and the Colorectal nursing team from Salford Royal Foundation Trust.

The winner for the award for a nurse nominated by a patient was Lauren McCrisken from Addenbrooke's Hospital, Cambridge University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust.

The judges were delighted to hear the outstanding care Lauren was providing her patients which was evident by her nomination.

The runners up were Anne Lauder from Glasgow Oncology Clinic at BMI Ross Hall Hospital and Anne Moutadjer from St Mary's Hospital, Imperial College Healthcare NHS Trust.

A special thank you goes to Charlene White, ITN newsreader and patron of the charity, for presenting these special awards at the National Colorectal Cancer Nurses Network (NCCNN) virtual study day on Wednesday 29 September.

2020

The 2020 Gary Logue Colorectal Cancer Nurse Awards took place on Wednesday 16 September 2020.

The winner of the 2020 award for a nurse nominated by patients was Sheena Woodward from Epsom General Hospital.

In their nominations, her patients said:

"She is a wonderful lady with exceptional people skills. She listens, responds and cares for me now with all my continuing checks."

"My general well-being, physical and mental welfare is down to her continuing care and guidance – she always works above and beyond the call of duty."

Sheena says: "I feel privileged to be part of my patients' lives and support them at the worst period of their life and to be recognised for doing something which I see as just my job is truly humbling."

The winner of the 2020 award for a nurse nominated by their colleagues is Allison Sharpe from the Royal Victoria Infirmary in Newcastle.

In their nominations, her colleagues said:

"She is widely regarded as an innovative, hardworking leader across the Trust and has mentored many young nurses who have now taken up leadership roles within Newcastle."

"I know I can rely and trust Allison with anything whether it is personal or professional and will never ask someone to do something if she wouldn’t do it herself. She is a warm hearted, hardworking outstanding individual that I aspire to be half as good as one day."

Allison says: "I was honoured to receive this award and flattered that my team nominated me. Over the past 25 years the team has evolved to 10 dedicated nurse specialists who have transformed the care of colorectal patients and I am extremely proud to be part of the team."
