Every month we celebrate someone who has gone above and beyond for us, whether its fundraising, volunteering or supporting.
Star of the Month
This month's Star of the Month goes to Gary, husband to Kirsty who is currently going through bowel cancer treatment.
"It was a huge shock when my wife Kirsty was diagnosed with bowel cancer at 34 and with no family history. Neither of us had given much, if any, thought to bowel cancer before then. The majority of our friends knew very little about it either.
The surgery Kirsty had to go thorough was somewhat overwhelming and while she was in hospital having surgery I felt quite helpless. As Kirsty continued to recover and was about to start chemotherapy I really wanted to do something to help raise awareness.
I work in the fitness industry and I have always been an advocate of living a fit and healthy lifestyle but watching Kirsty go through the surgery and now chemotherapy really brought home how important good health and fitness is when dealing with and recovering from illness. I really believe that she would not be coping so well if she had not started out with a good level of fitness.
I decided to promote healthy living with raising awareness and money by championing Bowel Cancer UK over the school summer holiday period. I run group fitness and Pilates classes for a living and over the summer all the money raised is going to Bowel Cancer UK for their important research and awareness campaigns. It has been going really well with my current clients as well as new faces turning up and taking part to keep fit and support the cause. I have also tried to promote awareness of bowel cancer by handing out Bowel Cancer UK’s leaflets and posting online. Our families, also keen to help, have held a couple of coffee mornings raising really impressive sums of cash for which we are really grateful. Everyone has been very generous.
So far the campaigning has raised over £2,000. I have no doubt the money will be well used by Bowel Cancer UK and particularly their Never too Young campaign. I really hope I have helped raised awareness about bowel cancer as well as the important of health and fitness, and I intend to continue to support the cause well into the future."
A massive thank you to Gary for raising such an amazing amount for us, we really appreciate it.
