Previous winners of the Gary Logue Colorectal Cancer Nurse Awards
The 2020 Gary Logue Colorectal Cancer Nurse Awards took place on Wednesday 16 September 2020. In an unprecedented and challenging year we've been inspired to hear stories of incredible colorectal cancer nursing practice across the country. Congratulations to the nominees and winners for their exceptional contributions to colorectal cancer nursing.
The winner of the 2020 award for a nurse nominated by patients is Sheena Woodward from Epsom General Hospital.
In their nominations, her patients said:
"She is a wonderful lady with exceptional people skills. She listens, responds and cares for me now with all my continuing checks."
"My general well-being, physical and mental welfare is down to her continuing care and guidance – she always works above and beyond the call of duty."
Sheena says: "I feel privileged to be part of my patients' lives and support them at the worst period of their life and to be recognised for doing something which I see as just my job is truly humbling."
The winner of the 2020 award for a nurse nominated by their colleagues is Allison Sharpe from the Royal Victoria Infirmary in Newcastle.
In their nominations, her colleagues said:
"She is widely regarded as an innovative, hardworking leader across the Trust and has mentored many young nurses who have now taken up leadership roles within Newcastle."
"I know I can rely and trust Allison with anything whether it is personal or professional and will never ask someone to do something if she wouldn’t do it herself. She is a warm hearted, hardworking outstanding individual that I aspire to be half as good as one day."
Allison says: "I was honoured to receive this award and flattered that my team nominated me. Over the past 25 years the team has evolved to 10 dedicated nurse specialists who have transformed the care of colorectal patients and I am extremely proud to be part of the team."
Genevieve Edwards, Chief Executive at Bowel Cancer UK, says: "It was inspiring to see the nominations for the Gary Logue awards, with so much talent, experience and compassion shining through. Sheena and Allison fully deserve this special recognition from their patients and colleagues.
"More than 268,000 people in the UK are living with bowel cancer, and colorectal nurses are absolutely dedicated to helping to improve the quality of life for those affected by the disease. A huge congratulations to all of our nominees and winners."
