Expert speakers presented on:

  • research on the socio-economic differences in patient experiences during COVID-19
  • updates in chemotherapy and immunotherapy treatments for advanced colorectal cancer
  • the use of FIT and options for diagnostic tests
  • research on improving the quality of life for patients living with and beyond cancer

We concluded the event with the presentation of the annual Gary Logue Colorectal Cancer Nurse Awards.

About the speakers

Professor Katriina Whitaker, Lead for Cancer Care, University of Surrey

Katriina's a Chartered Psychologist and Lead for Cancer Care in the School of Health Sciences at the University of Surrey. Katriina's programme of research focuses on early diagnosis and cancer, with a particular interest in how people interact with the health care system and health inequalities.

Katriina's an expert review panel member for Cancer Research UK's Early Diagnosis and Detection Trials, Behavioural Health System and Health Economics research panel and Tenovus Cancer Care Psychosocial Advisory Committee. She also sits on the Editorial Board for the European Journal of Cancer Care.

Dr Mark Harrison, Consultant Oncologist, Mount Vernon Cancer Centre

Mark is a consultant specialising in bowel cancer for 22 years. He is a specialist advisor to NICE and has an interest in novel treatments for rectal and anal cancer, and new drug integration into management of colorectal cancer.

Harriet Watson, Colorectal Consultant Nurse & Clinical Endoscopist, Guy's and St Thomas' NHS Foundation Trust

Harriet has looked after colorectal cancer patents for over 30 years and is clinical lead for the two week wait colorectal cancer pathway. She has worked for NHS England as a clinical advisor on colorectal cancer diagnostics, leading on the telephone assessment/straight to test pathway, decreasing time to diagnosis for colorectal cancer patients.

Harriet's a very experienced Clinical Endoscopist and co-developed and delivered the first Health Education England Clinical Endoscopists National Training Programme. Her area of specialist interest is early age-onset colorectal cancer and the use of FIT.

Dr Elisavet Moschopoulou, Postdoctoral Researcher, Queen Mary University of London

Elisavet's a postdoctoral researcher at Queen Mary University of London with an academic background in health psychology and research experience in cancer care. Elisavet's research interests focus on the development, evaluation and implementation of psychological interventions to address adverse outcomes in patients living with and beyond long-term health conditions.

Louise Goodwin, Research Nurse/Research Fellow, Sheffield Teaching Hospitals and Sheffield Hallam University

Louise is a Research Nurse at Sheffield Hallam University and Sheffield Teaching Hospitals NHS FT. Louise worked on the hospital ward for 17 years and in Clinical Research from 1999. Louise has been involved in multiple research projects, most of these studying various aspects of cancer care.
