Cancer Awareness Run To Turin (C.A.R.T.T )

Tuesday, November 22, 2011

Peter Jones and his four friends have completed their own 'Italian Job' to raise £10,000 for Bowel Cancer UK.

On Saturday 24th September, the Deputy Lord Major of Bristol, Mr Colin Smith waved off Peter and the team (Peter Bawn, Paul Setherton, Andrew Tsang and Matthew Skuse) from outside Bristol City Council as they began their attempt to drive from Bristol to Turin in three 1950's British Mini's.

The charity rally is the brainchild of Peter Jones, whose wife Debbie is currently undergoing chemotherapy after originally being diagnosed with bowel cancer last year.

"I don't think anyone can be prepared for that moment when they or their partner are told they have cancer. I know that without the support of our family, friends and work colleagues, our lives would have been more difficult over the past 15 months."

Peter has long harboured the wish to drive a classic Mini, to Turin to commemorate the 40th anniversary of the "Italian Job".

CART 2011 Diary:

Saturday: Bristol to Lille - 298 miles

Sunday: Lille to Troyes - 236 miles

Monday: Troyes to Geneva - 284 Miles

Tuesday: Geneva to Turin - 200 miles

After driving for 4 days and covering over 1,000 miles the three mini's limped over the finish line at the Old Fiat factory or as it is today, the roof of the Lingotto Hotel, Turin.

Only two of the three mini's made it back to Bristol on Saturday 1st October by their own steam with the third having to be transported back by recovery truck!

"Nobody ever said that taking 3 Mini's with 1950's technology from Bristol to Turin would be easy, and it wasn't. But it was an experience we all enjoyed and would one day like to repeat. We hope to raise in the region of £10,000 for Bowel Cancer UK, and although this trip may be over we will continue in our quest to raise the awareness of this disease. We would like to thank everybody who has supported us, and hope that our efforts will help in the fight to find a cure."

A huge thank you to Peter and the team for their fantastic efforts!
