Bristol rugby club cycles for Bowel Cancer UK

Friday, August 26, 2011

Today, five members of Old Bristolians RFC embarked on a nine-day 900 mile challenge from John O'Groats to Land's End to raise funds for Bowel Cancer UK.

Keir Chastney, Nick Foley, Ali Parry, Rich Staniford, Tim Thorne and Luke's brother Carl who have set off on the epic cycle ride have already exceeded their fundraising target of £5,000.

A supporter's brother, Luke Zammit, was diagnosed with bowel cancer in September at just 22 years of age, and he asked the Old Bristolians to raise funds and awareness for Bowel Cancer UK.

"The 'JogLe' cycle challenge came about over a few beers at the pub" said Carl of the team's impromptu decision to fundraise, "I wanted to get involved to show support for my brother and help other people affected by the disease."

"I was really surprised when Carl told me he was going to join in the JogLe cycle," said Luke. "He never used to be that athletic, but he's been training remarkably hard, and the Old Bristolians have been really supportive and keen to raise funds to fight bowel cancer."
