National Bowel Cancer Audit Report

Wednesday, November 30, 2011

Our statement in response to the RCS/ ACPGBI's National Bowel Cancer Audit Report 2011.

Deborah Alsina, CEO, Bowel Cancer UK said: "This year's National Bowel Cancer Audit Report provides a timely and valuable insight into the state of bowel cancer treatment, in particular surgery, in England and Wales. It highlights the fact that surgery remains the most common type of bowel cancer treatment, with 75% of patients having some kind of surgery and 60% having surgery specifically to remove tumours. It also shows, sadly, that 28% of colon cancer and 12% of rectal cancer patients require urgent or emergency surgery. This highlights the vital importance of awareness and early diagnosis in preventing bowel cancer patients from reaching this emergency stage."
