Folk singer takes part in Bowel Cancer UK's Big Book Swap
British folk punk artist Frank Turner has lent his support to
Bowel Cancer UK and is appealing for people to dig out their
favourite books and get involved with a Big Book Swap this
month.
Frank, nominee for best solo artist at the Shockwaves NME awards
2011, named satirical, historical novel Catch 22 by American author
Joseph Heller as his favourite book and one that he'd swap.
Frank said: "I first read Catch 22 when I was 13 years old and
it totally blew my mind. I've since read it another five times and
would happily read it again as it's easily the funniest book I've
ever read. All of humanity is contained in this book; it has a
fantastically rich collection of characters, including the main
character who is a personal hero of mine. Catch 22 has one of the
most crushing reveals in literary history; it's essentially a story
about staying alive and the value of being alive which is why I've
chosen it as my favourite book."
The singer-songwriter's copy of Catch 22 is one of a number of
books donated by famous faces supporting the Big Book Swap
including comedian Frank Skinner and actress Jane Asher. Bowel
Cancer UK are auctioning the books from 24th -
31st October and lucky members of the public have the
chance to own them by placing a minimum £5 bid on www.ebay.co.uk
Hosting a book swap is easy. Having one at home is the perfect
opportunity to catch up with friends or why not get together with
work colleagues to share your favourite books? Get everyone to make
a donation and then pass on the proceeds to Bowel Cancer UK.
Deborah Alsina, Chief Executive, explained: "Many of the
patients and families we have helped have shared how certain books
have changed their lives. They have drawn strength from them and
reading has helped them to stay positive during their treatment. So
get hold of your favourite book, organise a Big Book Swap in
October and raise funds for Bowel Cancer UK at the same time!"
