Younger People's Campaign
Be Behind It Campaign
In April 2007, we launched a Younger People’s Awareness Campaign called Be Behind It, in partnership with the friends and family of 26 year old Tamar Bailey who died of bowel cancer in 2006.
At Bowel Cancer UK we want to encourage younger people to recognise the early signs of bowel cancer and visit their GPs if they have any concerns. We also want to encourage this more health-conscious generation to communicate these important messages to friends, parents, grandparents and other older relatives, who may also be at risk.
This is the first time that the charity has specifically targeted the under-45s, and the campaign follows an increasing number of calls to our nurse-led Advisory Service from younger people who are diagnosed with or worried about the disease.
We have also carried out a survey of clinicians to see if they are seeing younger patients more - which they appear to be, and we are planning other activities to raise awareness of of this issue, including amongst GPs and the general public.
Why not visit www.BeBehindIt.com to see the results of a high profile photoshoot which took place to support the campaign; to find out what diet and lifestyle choices younger people can make that might help prevent bowel cancer or to find out how you can donate to the Tamar Bailey Fund. Donations to this fund will help us to continue to raise awareness of bowel cancer amongst younger people.
The Launch Party
On 25th April 2007, the official launch party of the Be Behind It campaign took place at the impressive Spring Studios in Kentish Town, who also hosted the photo shoot. It was a great night and a wonderful opportunity for all the models, photographer John Sanders and all those that helped out on the day to get together. It also provided Bowel Cancer UK with the means to thank each person and organisation individually for all that they have done to get this campaign off of the ground.
Be Behind It Girls Run for Bowel Cancer UK
Since launching the Be Behind It campaign Natalie Legg, Salpi Bailey and their pals have been very busy!
First of all, Natalie (who has been a leading force of the Be Behind It campaign) and Bryony Hussey, bravely signed up for and completed the London Marathon for the Tamar Bailey Fund at Bowel Cancer UK. Together they managed to raise the fantastic sum of almost £4000. We are greatly appreciative of the girls’ wonderful efforts… which, in Natalie’s case, did not stop there.
On 1st July 2007, Natalie, Salpi and eleven of their Be Behind It friends ventured out on a damp, drizzly morning to run one of the largest 10K events in the country and raise more money for the Tamar Bailey Fund. So far, the girls have managed to raise roughly £3700, which is amazing, and we thank them warmly for all their kind efforts in continuing to support our cause.
Why not get behind this campaign and join the Be Behind It facebook group now!
